How to Organize & Inventory Your Freezer
Before I send you on your way with your freezer inventory sheets, let’s chat about how you can best utilize this resource.
Step One: Clean it All Out
Since you want to make the most of your freezer storage space, this step is so important. Begin by removing everything from your freezer, and tossing the expired or freezer burnt items. There’s no sense in inventorying items that aren’t usable after all.
While your freezer is empty, go ahead and grab a cleaning rag and your favorite all purpose cleaner. Wipe down all the shelves so that everything is nice and clean.
Step Two: Make Groups
Now that you have everything out of the freezer, take a few minutes to sort items into groups. This serves two purposes. First, when you start to put everything back into the freezer, you can store like-items together. Second, it will make your inventory sheet much neater (if you’re using a categorized page).
Step Three: Take Inventory
Now is when you can start writing down exactly what you have and putting your inventory sheets to use! I recommend using a pencil or laminating the page and using dry erase markers (I’ll chat more about this in the next step). The amount of detail you include here is going to depend on your personal family needs.
You may choose to just write down the item and quantity. This may be more than enough detail for your frozen food storage. Or maybe you need to use a more detailed printable to keep track of all your food. This is particularly helpful when you have a large amount of freezer items. That’s why I’ve also included an option that gives you space for the expiration date, food category, and package sizes.
As you write down your items, stack them neatly back in the freezer. Be sure to put the oldest items nearest the top so that you can use those first.
Step Four: Keep Your Inventory Log Handy
Okay, I don’t want to admit this, but I will. How many times have you made the super organized list only to shove it to the side and never use it again? Yea, me too..
That’s why this step is so important. You have to keep this inventory sheet somewhere you will regularly see it and update it. This can look so many different ways, but here are a couple of the ways I can see working for most of us.
The first option is to laminate the printable and keep it right on your fridge/freezer in the kitchen. By laminating the page (I have this affordable laminator) you are able to use a fine tip dry erase marker to write on it. This means you can quickly add or remove items and update quantities. This works well for the freezer attached to your refrigerator, since it’s probably the most frequently utilized freezer.
The second option, which I like to use for my chest freezers, is to place the inventory pages in my planner. Whenever I am doing my monthly and weekly meal planning, I can quickly reference these printables to see what I already have. As I plan out my meals, I update the quantities that will be left after I use those items.
Speaking of meal planning, I have some free meal planning calendar printables that coordinate these inventory sheets you can grab!

Why You Should Keep a Freezer Inventory
I think we’ve all been guilty of having a freezer that is so overfull that you really have no idea what’s going on in the back (or bottom). You just keep adding your new groceries to the front. Meanwhile, those items in the back just keep getting pushed further and further back.
Food Waste: Knowing exactly what you have in your freezer can drastically cut down on food waste. No more forgetting about items and having them go bad.
Saving Money: Having a well-organized freezer makes shopping sales easier. Now you can confidently pick up extra frozen goods when the prices are low and know that you won’t forget about them!
Meal Planning: A freezer inventory makes meal planning a breeze! I can easily see what meat and veggie items I have an abundance of when I am making our weekly menus.
