The Best Bibles for Taking Notes
Looking for a new Bible that has plenty of space for taking notes right next to the Biblical text? I’ve got you covered with this list!
I know this can be a bit controversial for some people, but I absolutely love having my Bible study notes directly in my Bible. I’ll add notes of all kinds. Everything from details that provide clarity to the passage to words of praise and worship for God’s goodness.
But certain Bibles don’t have much space for note taking. There is just enough space for the Biblical text, without large columns or spacing. That’s perfectly fine, but if you’re like me and want Bible that you can dedicate to your scripture studying pursuits, you need more space. Which is why I’ve put this post together.
I’m going to share some of the best Bibles I’ve found that provide adequate space for Bible journaling and/or notetaking. Some of these I own personally, some I’ve just adored from a distance. Let’s get started!

Why Taking Notes in Your Bible is a Good Thing
Like I mentioned before, this can get controversial. Some people do not thing you should write in your Bible. They see it as “adding to God’s Word”.
But personally, I see it as a reflection of my time spent seeking the Lord, longing to know Him more deeply and understand His commands. I’m not adding to His Word. I’m simply using writing as a way to absorb what He has already said and done.

This simple process of note taking can be incredibly helpful for new Christians who are seeking to understand the Bible more deeply. But it is also a beautiful way to see your spiritual growth over the years. As you re-read scripture passages years in the future, you’ll see notes that you made previously. You’ll see ways that God has answered prayers and grown you in His faithfulness.

I’ve tried to include a variety of some of the most popular translations in this list. Every title is hyperlinked to the product page on Amazon for easy shopping!
KJV Large Print Note Taking Bible
This hardcover Bible in the King James Translation offers a big 2.5 inch margin alongside text. Not only that, but that the text itself is large and has wider spacing than usual. The combination of large margins and large text means that you have a lot of space for adding in notes from your favorite commentary or sermon notes.
ESV Journaling Study Bible
I absolutely love that this Bible combines the best of a study Bible and a journaling Bible. You’ll find 2 inch margins that are perfect for notetaking, as well as more than 12,000 study notes to help you deepen your understanding. It includes maps, illustrations, cross references and more. It also comes with various cover designs, including this floral pattern that is absolutely beautiful!
Hosanna Revival – CSB Notetaking Bible
Another option with a beautiful cover. This Notetaking Bible from Hosanna Revival features a single column of scripture, with a 1.75 inch margin that leaves you with plenty of room for adding details.
She Reads Truth
This is another affordable option in the CSB translation that has large margins for adding Bible study notes. You’ll also find timelines, maps, and even short devotional related content sprinkled throughout the text. The quality design and affordable price point also make it an excellent option for gifting to one of your friends who enjoys studying the Word.
Spiral Bound Bible Set
This option is actually a 5 volume set of the books of the Bible instead of one large volume. But they are so well done, I have to mention them. The volumes are divided by Pentateuch, Historical Books, Poetry, Prophets and New Testament, in the ESV translation. Each volume provides generous space for notetaking and journaling. The spiral binding allows the books to lay flat for comfortable writing.
NKJV Journal the Word Bible
This is another excellent option for anyone looking to keep notes in their Bible. Not only are the margins large, but it is also a red letter Bible. This means that the word of Jesus are in red, making it easy to see the exact words He spoke. And of course, it has a beautiful cover.
NIV Spiral Bound Bible
This illustrating Bible isn’t set up in your standard style. It is spiral bound, much larger in size (approximately 10 X 11.5 inches), and the paper is thicker than a traditional Bible. It includes a huge 3.75 inch margin for all the notetaking you could imagine. It also comes in a variety of covers, so you’re sure to find something that you love.
Interleaved Bible (Best Choice for Maximum Note Taking)
If you are looking for the most space to keep notes in your Bible, an interleaved option is your best bet. I absolutely love my ESV Interleaved option, but there is also this NKJV interleaved option. Every other page is completely blank, providing so much space to add sermon notes, prayers, and reflections. They can be a bit pricey, but it is definitely an item that you can pass down to future generations.
