Christmas is not just a time for gifts and decorations but an opportunity to teach children about the true meaning of the holiday – the birth of Jesus Christ. By teaching these Bible verses to our kids, we can help refocus the Christmas season on Christ.
As Christmas time approaches, we are faced again with the struggle that so often presents itself to Christians.
We desire to keep our hearts, and our children’s hearts, focused on the indescribable gift of Christ’s birth.
But too often we find ourselves bogged down in the gifts, decoration, and Christmas activities. In today’s fast paced culture, we have to take the time to be intentional in our faith.
My hope with this post is to give you a free resource that you can use in your home to shift your family focus back to the birth of Christ – and all of the peace, hope, and joy that we have because of this glorious day!
Free Printable Christmas Scripture Cards and Reading Plan for Kids
Y’all know I love free printables (if you didn’t, now you do).
So, as I was reading God’s Word, looking for beautiful verses that remind us of the true meaning of Christmas to share with you, I thought…I need a printable.
So, I went ahead and created a set of “Christmas Bible Verses” cards that you can print for free! These free printable Christmas verse cards are perfect for scripture memory during the holiday season.
Let’s take a look at the Christmas scriptures first, and then you can grab your free printable down at the bottom of the post.
(Some of these passages may seem lengthy for young children, but you can never go wrong reading scripture to your children of any age. Never underestimate the ability of young minds to understand the Word of God! )
Christmas Bible Verses for Kids
All verses are taken from the ESV translation.
Isaiah 7:14
Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
Isaiah 9:6
For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 11:1
There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.
Micah 5:2
But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah,
who are too little to be among the clans of Judah,
from you shall come forth for me
one who is to be ruler in Israel,
whose coming forth is from of old,
from ancient days.
(When reading of Jesus’ birth, I always like to start with reading some of the prophetic promises. Use these verses to teach your children how God sent messages through the prophets hundreds of years before the birth of Jesus. Be sure to circle back to these verses once you read of them being fulfilled in the New Testament!)
Matthew 1:18-25
Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothedf to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:
“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and they shall call his name Immanuel”
(which means, God with us). When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.
Luke 2: 8-20
And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,
“Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”
When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.” And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child. And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.
The book of Luke is where we get a beautiful account of the birth of Jesus. We also see the fulfillment of the prophecy found in Micah 5:2 about the birthplace of Jesus.
Matthew 2:1-12
Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet:
“‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for from you shall come a ruler
who will shepherd my people Israel.’”
John 1:14
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
John 3:16
For God so loved the world,i that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
Philippians 2:5-7
Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
This verse emphasizes the humility of Jesus, who willingly left His divine glory to become human.
1 John 4:9
In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him.
Psalm 96:11
Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice…

How to Use These Free Christmas Bible Verses with Kids
These printable Christmas verse cards is a great way to practice scripture memory with your kids. (You could even use them as part of your Sunday school lessons!)
To practice scripture memory with kids, simply select a verse or two a week. Go over the verse together daily. We like to do this during our homeschool morning routine or at dinner time.
But don’t just take the time to memorize the words. Really discuss the meaning behind the verses. This will allow your kids to see how these verses affect our real lives.
Teaching your children God’s Word at a young age is so important. As they grow into adults, they will always have His Word with them, no matter where they find themselves.
