Free Printable Copywork Pages (Autumn Themed)
Fall is my favorite season for homeschooling. After a long hot summer, we’re able to grab our schoolbooks and head outdoors to enjoy nature. The cooler air makes it so much easier to settle into lessons, and somehow everything feels a little more refreshing and inspiring when we’re surrounded by the colors of autumn.
To match the changing seasons, I like to add a little seasonal variety into our lessons. One of the most practical ways to do this is through copywork.
Copywork is one of my favorite simple tools for learning. It gives kids handwriting practice, helps with spelling and grammar, and best of all, it fills their minds with beautiful words. And when those words reflect the season we’re living in it makes the practice feel extra special.
That’s why I put together a set of free autumn copywork pages for you. They’re full of passages from classic literature, poetry, Scripture, and nature stories—all with an autumn theme. I hope they add a little seasonal joy to your homeschool routine!

What is Copywork?
If you’re new to the idea of copywork, it’s simply the practice of having children copy a passage word-for-word. It’s extremely popular in the Charlotte Mason homeschooling community, but it is useful for everyone.
It might seem a little old-fashioned, but there’s a reason it’s been used for generations. Copywork builds strong handwriting, spelling, grammar, and even attention to detail—all without the need for a workbook. All you need is a passage to copy and something to write on.
It’s learning that feels natural, yet so effective. And as a bonus, kids are copying down words that are worth remembering.
What You’ll Find in These Fall Copywork Pages
When I think of Autumn, I think of giving thanks, enjoying the beauty of the changing seasons, harvesting the last of summer crops, and cozy evenings with family. Because of this, I selected passages that inspire those types of feelings.
You’ll find 20 passages from scripture, poetry, classic children’s literature, nature lore, and even a couple of historical type texts.
Here’s a list of the books I pulled passages from:
- Bible Verses from ESV Translation
- Charlotte’s Web – E.B. White
- Farmer Boy and Little House in the Big Woods – Laura Ingalls Wilder
- Understood Betsy – Dorothy Canfield Fisher
- Secrets of the Woods – William Long
- Anne of Green Gables – L.M. Montgomery
- Burgess Bird Book for Children – Thornton Burgess
- Autumn Story – Jill Barklem
- The Lewis & Clark Expedition – Richard Neuberger
- An Old-Fashioned Thanksgiving – Louisa M. Alcott
- Among the Meadow People – Clara Dillingham
- Pilgrim Stories – Margaret Pumphrey
- Miracles on Maple Hill – Virginia Sorenson
- Poetry from Christian Rosetti, R.L. Stevenson and George Cooper

How often should we do copywork?
In our homeschool, we use copywork as the primary method to teach spelling and practice good grammar. Because of this, we do copywork daily.
While the results are not always immediate, I find that over time this process of copying good spelling over and over sticks with my children better than traditional spelling lists and rules.
How much should a child copy?
Since these copywork selections can be used for all ages, it is important to consider the age of the child to answer this question. Younger children or new writers are not going to have the stamina to copy an entire paragraph. However, your middle school and up children may be able to.
I find it helpful to set a timer for my young children. I will set the timer for 10 minutes and have them work until the timer goes off. This means that they may work on the same passage for several days, depending on the length of it.
Of course, you know your child best. You may need to assign a specific number of sentences. Just keep in mind that some of these sentences are quite long, which is quite common in classic writing.

These copywork pages were originally create for my own personal homeschool use. I knew that I wanted my children to be able to easily access these pages without having to get me for help. I also knew that they sometimes find it difficult to hold a book open or glance back and forth at a separate page while trying to copy.
So instead of just making a list of passages to copy, I included space under each passage to write. I’ve tried to include enough space in the margins to accommodate large print. Now my children can grab just this one page and work on copywork. No additional notebooks, binders or books required.
You can print these pages double sided, but if you’re worried there won’t be enough space for copying the whole passage, print single sided. Then the child can continue copying on the back of the page if needed.
