I remember the days when I thought from scratch cooking was for cooking experts. I just assumed I would always be one of the people who had to purchase pre-made everything from the grocery store.

But after my first time of making Homemade Southern Style Chicken and Dumplings, I realized it actually was something that I could do. Is it more work? Sure. But you cannot beat a good, homemade, from scratch meal. Not to mention that cooking from scratch can save you so much money on your grocery budget.

For a meal to be from scratch, there are several different components you’ll need to know how to make. Things like breads, noodles, biscuits, tortillas, etc. You don’t want to have to pull the recipe book out every single time you need to whip up a batch of biscuit dough.

That’s where a simple recipe, with simple ingredients come in.

Start with an easy recipe that you can memorize, and from there you can add extra ingredients to customize.

The recipe I’m about to share makes delicious biscuits that can be used in a variety of ways. It doesn’t require a lot of time or fancy kitchen equipment. What more could you ask for?

What is a Drop Biscuit?

A drop biscuit is when your biscuit dough is scooped up and “dropped” on to the pan. This eliminates the need for extra kitchen equipment, like a biscuit cutter. It also eliminates the need to roll dough out.

You’re not going to get flaky layers or perfectly round biscuits with this recipe. But you are going to get fluffy biscuits, that taste delicious.

They are really some of the easiest biscuits to make. Recipes like this are the best way to start cooking from scratch because it is very basic and simple and not so overwhelming.

(Check out the bottom of the post for some of my favorite recipes to use drop biscuits in!)

Ingredient List

  • All Purpose Flour
  • Regular Milk (Whole milk or 2% if you want to lessen the fat content)
  • Butter
  • Baking Powder
  • Salt
  • Sugar

Supplies

  • Large Bowl
  • Cast Iron Skillet or Baking Pan
  • Measuring Cup

Directions for Cooking Drop Biscuits

Heat oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit.

Melt one stick of butter (1/2 cup) and set to the side. For best results, you want to let the butter cool slightly.

In large mixing bowl, place 2 cups of flour, baking soda, and salt.

Next, pour the melted butter and 1 cup of milk into flour mixture.

Mix until a soft dough forms. The dough will still be fairly sticky to work with.

Using a large utensil spoon, scoop the dough out and drop it on to the large cast iron skillet or baking pan. Drop biscuits will not be uniform in shape, but you should try to keep the sizes somewhat the same.

(I love using cast iron to cook in. I feel like it is such a versatile tool to have in your kitchen. For this recipe, I use my large 12-inch Lodge skillet.)

Place biscuits in the hot oven. Cook time can vary based on the size you make the biscuits. For this recipe with 12 servings, you will need to cook for about 12-15 minutes. If you make larger biscuits, you will need to adjust the cook time.

If you’d like, halfway through cooking, you can brush the tops of the hot biscuits with a bit of extra melted butter. This will help you achieve that beautiful golden brown color.

Store any leftovers in airtight container in fridge. You can reheat by wrapping in a damp paper towel and warming for 20-30 seconds in the microwave.
