Fall Homemaking Ideas
1. Bake Something with Pumpkin or Apples
One of the best things about Fall is the food! Pumpkin cookies, apple crisps, cinnamon bread—there are so many cozy baked goods to try. The scent alone makes your whole house feel warm and welcoming.
Try a new fall baking recipe each week or make an afternoon of baking with the kids. Bonus points if you bring a batch to share with a friend or neighbor!
2. Thrift for Cozy Fall Decor
Fall is the perfect time to refresh your space with warm, inviting touches. Instead of shopping new, check out your local thrift store for unique fall finds. I am always amazed at the good deals I can get on home decor.
Items to Thrift for this Fall:
- Chunky knit blankets
- Amber glass bottles or vases
- Brass candlesticks
- Wooden bowls and cutting boards
- Warm-toned artwork or frames
- Cozy throw pillows in flannel or plaid
3. Decorate with Nature
Bring the outdoors in! A basket of pinecones, a bundle of dried wheat, colorful fallen leaves, or even a few branches from your backyard can make beautiful, seasonal décor. Plus, your kids will absolutely love getting outside and finding these things.
You can also create a centerpiece with mini pumpkins, fresh apples, and candles for your kitchen table. It doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive to be beautiful.
4. Make a Warm Seasonal Drink
I don’t know when this started, but I am a sucker for a good seasonal beverage. I crave fresh and fruity flavors in spring and summer, and warm and cozy drinks during cooler months.
Whether you’re a coffee drinker or tea lover, Fall has so many delicious options.
And while you could hit up a local coffee shop, you can also create some delicious drinks right in your own kitchen (I even like to make my own Pumpkin Spice Coffee Creamer). Serve it in your favorite mug and enjoy it with a good book or while sitting on the porch.
Prefer a cold season drink? Try making this iced PSL with instant espresso!
5. Try New Fall Recipes with Seasonal Flavors
Apples, sweet potatoes, squash, and hearty soups make their way into my kitchen this time of year. Take a little time to try some new Fall recipes that make the most of the season’s flavors.
6. Light a Fall Candle (or Make a Simmer Pot)
There’s nothing like the smell of cinnamon, clove, and orange peel to set the mood. If you want to avoid artificial fragrances, try making a fall simmer pot instead!
Try this combo:
- Orange slices
- Cinnamon sticks
- A few cloves
- A splash of vanilla
Let it simmer on the stove and fill your home with the scent of autumn.
7. Read Cozy Books
Fall is my favorite time to snuggle up with a book under a warm blanket. I’m lying – every time of year is my favorite time of year to snuggle up with a book. But that’s beside the point I suppose..
Classic novels, homemaking inspiration, or a good devotional all feel even better with a mug of something hot nearby.
Here are a few of my favorite atmospheric reads for Fall (some of these editions are absolutely beautiful!):
8. Start a Fall Craft
Whether you knit, crochet, paint, or sew—this is a great season to start a creative project.
9. Host a Simple Soup & Bread Night
There’s something so comforting about a pot of soup and a loaf of fresh bread. Invite a friend or two over, and enjoy a comfort food meal together!
Not sure what soup to make? Try chicken tortilla, creamy potato, or one of our favorites, southern chicken and dumplings.
11. Swap Out Seasonal Art
Just like Spring, Fall is a fun time to change up the art in your home. Search Pinterest for free printable fall artwork (florals, scripture verses, pumpkins, etc.) and print them out at home.
You can also grab a few thrifted frames and rotate them seasonally—it’s one of my favorite ways to decorate without spending much.
12. Join a Fall Reading or Homemaking Challenge
Whether it’s a 30-day decluttering challenge or a fall-themed book club, joining a seasonal challenge can keep you inspired. Set small, cozy goals like reading one chapter a day or baking one new recipe a week. Get this free printable 30-day challenge chart to track your progress.
13. Plan a Fall Picnic or Bonfire
Fall weather is perfect for an outdoor picnic or backyard bonfire. Pack up some hot apple cider, a couple of blankets, and sandwiches. Or roast marshmallows and enjoy a slow evening under the stars.
Even if it’s just your family, these little moments make big memories.
14. Create a Fall Bucket List
Want to make the most of the season? Write a list of things you want to do this Fall, then hang it on the fridge or chalkboard as a visual reminder.
