Best Bible Story Books for Kids in 2024
If you’ve been looking for books to help you teach your kids about the truths found in the Bible, you’re sure to find a helpful resource in this post!
As Christian parents, we know that one of the most important tasks we’ve been given is to raise our children up according to God’s Word. However, it can be difficult to explain some of those deep theological concepts to young children.
But friend, I want to encourage you to not skimp on getting truth into your children during those early years! Even those theological concepts that may seem too advanced can be taught by using some of the wonderful resources we have available.
At the bottom of the post, you’ll find some special notes on how to use these resources with your own kids!

Best Bible Story Books for Children
1.The Ology – Marty Mackowski
This is such a great book for teaching kids theology. Through the use of examples and analogies, truths that may be hard to understand will start to make sense to them. The book also has beautiful illustrations that your younger kids will love looking at.
The book starts with the Theology of God and ends with Theology of God’s Word. You’ll find chapters in between on the Theology of Sin and of Christ. Each topic has several Bible verses there on the page, as well as additional verses you can reference.
And don’t worry about short attention spans. Each “lesson” is very short and usually only takes 5 minutes to read, perfect for small children. If you have older children, you may choose to deep dive into the referenced scriptures with them.
If the idea of theology is somewhat foreign to you as a parent, this book is a great way to long right alongside them. Even your little kids will learn from this book. My 4-year-old is always able to gain some type of knowledge from our readings.
2. Tales that Tell the Truth Series
Y’all, this series is so fun to read with kids! It has some of my favorite, sound children’s books in it. There are 14 books total. Some of my favorites are The Garden, The Curtain, and The Cross, God’s Very Good Idea, and Any Time, Any Place, Any Prayer.
These are shorter books – so something that you would probably read all in one sitting. This makes them perfect for even the smallest little listeners. And your little ones will love all of the bright, vivid pictures.
But what makes me love these books the most is that they don’t skimp on Gospel truths. You’ll find biblically sound stories that will encourage your child’s relationship with the Lord.

3. Little Pilgrim’s Progress
Adapted from John Bunyans Classic, The Pilgrim’s Progress, this version has been adapted for young readers. If you’re not familiar with the classic story, it is an allegory of the various trials Christians will face in this life.
In this version, the story follows Woodland creatures, Christian and Christiana, on their journey to find the King. The book is full of beautiful black and white artwork and it is sure to keep your children’s attention.
This is a rather large book, but my children (3 & 6 years old at the time) gladly sat and listened to a chapter each day. They really liked the pictures and the action that happened.
Just take note – if your children are younger, you may have to take a little time to explain some of the allegories to them or define words. I plan to go through this with them again in the future as they grow.
4. Wonderfull: Ancient Pslams Ever New
The books of Psalms is well known as a book that can guide us in our prayers in worship. And this book is meant to teach that same thing to young children.
The book follows a young boy and his grandfather as they read through the Psalms together. As the boy grows and life changes happen, He grows to cherish the truth and wisdom He has found in the Psalms.
I absolutely love having my children see that God’s Word is applicable to real, everyday life.
5.Jesus Storybook Bible – Sally Lloyd Jones
When it comes to Bible storybooks for early readers, this is one of the best. Instead of just retelling beloved Bible stories in easier to understand format, your children will see how every story in the Bible points to Jesus Christ as our Savior.
You take the big picture of scripture in chronological order. It starts in the Old Testament and goes all the way through the New Testament. You’ll pay special attention to how Jesus is at the center at each story.
Honestly, even as an adult I love to read through these stories with my children. You can reflect on God’s love and His plan for redemption that has existed since the beginning. It’s safe to say that this has been one of my favorite Bible story books.
(Edit: Since originally publishing this post, I’ve been made aware of some concerns with this authors stance on certain issues. I have not come across anything in this particular book that is an issue, however you may want to research the author prior to supporting.)

6.How Great is Our God
Have you ever wondered how you can teach your kids to worship God by taking notice of His creation? This book is for you!
This devotional book takes a look at 100 different scientific facts. You will cover various science topics – from space to animals to the human body. After learning a few fun facts about them, you will discuss how God is the wonderful Creator of all of these things. Each devotion includes a Bible verse and a short prayer.
This one also comes in a board book version if you have very young kids!
We used this devotional in our homeschool “morning time”. I would often try to find a devotion that linked to something we were currently studying in science.
7.The Wonder of Creation
If the book above sounded good to you – this is the second book in the series written by Max Lucado. You’ll find 100 more devotionals that reflect on just how wonderful God is as Creator of it all!
I haven’t purchased the second one yet, but it is absolutely on my list of books I want to work through with my boys!
8.One Big Story Bible Storybook
If you’re looking for a book that will teach your children the big picture of the Bible, you’ll love this one!
At the end of each story, you’ll find a few things to help you think deeper. You’ll find a “Christ Connection” that shows how every single story in the Bible points to Jesus. You’ll also find a “Big Picture Question” that will require your children to think back to the story just read and recall a fact.
Each reading is pretty straightforward. There isn’t a lot of fluff added to try to grab attention. I find the straightforwardness makes this one nice for older kids (6-10) who may not like the “little kid storybooks”.
If you really like the look of this book, but think your kids are too young, they also have versions for younger kids in the One Big Story Collection.
9.Action Bible
This book is written in the format of a graphic novel (think comic books) which makes it very appealing to older kids.
Even though it is titled as a “Bible”, I would say it is more of a storybook since it is paraphrased and doesn’t go verse by verse. If you’re looking for a Bible with scripture, you’ll want to grab a more literal translation. However, the Action Bible is great for retelling the stories of the Bible in an attention-grabbing way.
My boys especially love this book because it is action packed. Each page is full of illustrations for them to look over as I read.
Should a Bible Story Book Take the Place of Scripture?
I don’t believe there is any substitute for scripture – for children or adults. However, I do find that storybook Bibles or devotionals can be helpful in deepening our children’s understanding of.
So, in our house, we utilize books like the ones found in this post as additional resources. We still read scripture directly to our children during “family Bible time”. We also work on things like scripture memory during our homeschool time.
As a parent, you’ll always want to do your due diligence to make sure that a book aligns with truth. Just because something is marketed as “Christian” doesn’t always mean it is sound doctrine.
